The 1st Battalion, 30th
Infantry was originally constituted on Feb. 2, 1901 in the Regular Army
as Company A, 30th Infantry. It organized on March 16, 1901 at the
Presidio of San Francisco, California.
Thereafter, the 30th
Infantry was assigned on Nov. 21, 1917 to the 3rd Division; relieved on
Jan. 12, 1940 from assignment to the 3rd Division; reassigned on May 15,
1940 to the 3rd Division, later re-designated as the 3rd Infantry
Division; relieved on April 6, 1951 from assignment to the 3rd Infantry
Division; and reassigned on Dec. 2, 1954 to the 3rd Infantry Division.
The unit was reorganized and
re-designated on July 1, 1957 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company,
1st Battle Group, 30th Infantry, and remained assigned to the 3rd
Infantry Division, while its organic elements were at the same time
constituted and activated. The unit was reorganized and re-designated on
July 10, 1963 as the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry. It inactivated on
June 16, 1989 in Germany and was relieved from assignment to the 3rd
Infantry Division.
The battalion was reassigned
on Aug. 16, 1992 to the 3rd Infantry Division and activated in Germany.
It inactivated there on Jan. 15, 1994.
It reactivated on Feb. 16,
1996 at Fort Benning, Georgia. Since then the battalion has successfully
deployed in support of full spectrum combat operations supporting the
3rd Inf. Div. and most recently deployed with the 3rd Brigade Combat
Team, 3rd inf. Div., in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III.
The 1-30th Inf. was
reinstated on Sept. 6, 2006, at Fort Stewart in a re-flagging ceremony.
The regiment took over the 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment's place
as part of the reorganization to modular units of actions for the 3rd
Infantry Division.
