Fourth Battalion, Third Aviation Regiment was originally
constituted in the Regular Army on April 23, 1957 as the 3rd Aviation Company and assigned to the 3rd Infantry
Division. Officially activated on July 1, 1957 at Fort Benning, Georgia, it was reorganized and redesignated
twice before moving to Franconia, Germany in June 1964 as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 3rd Aviation
Battalion.
Army demands for manpower and equipment in Vietnam contributed to the deactivation of the unit in 1967. On May 21,
1972, the unit was reactivated and redesignated as the Aviation Company, 3rd Infantry Division based in the Wurzburg
area of Franken. It was reorganized and redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Aviation Battalion
on August 21, 1978 and later occupied the newly built aviation facilities at Giebelstadt
Army Airfield. During this tenure in Europe, the unit participated in
numerous return of forces to Europe exercises, commonly known as "Reforgers,"
and maintained patrols on the borders of east and west Germany. During Reforger 1977, the unit conducted the first
airmobile operations in Europe.
It was redesignated as Company D, 3rd Aviation on August 16, 1987, relieved from assignment to the 3rd Infantry
Division, and assigned to the 2nd Armored Division at Fort Hood, Texas. The unit was inactivated at Fort Hood, Texas
on March 15, 1991.
9th Battalion had deployed to Kuwait in February 2003 as one of three assault battalions in the 101st Airborne
Division. In the early days of the war, 9th Battalion air assaulted nearly 2,000 soldiers from all three Brigade
Combat Teams into positions vicinity An Najaf, then later to secure the southern approaches to Baghdad and the
southern portions of the city. Less than two weeks later, the Battalion led the planning and execution of the
longest air assault in the history of the Division when over 1,400 Soldiers of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team air
assaulted more than 300 miles to secure the city of Mosul. For the next nine months, the Battalion conducted
combat and stability operations in Mosul and throughout Northern Iraq, supporting the 101st and other coalition
forces, returning to Fort Campbell in February 2004. In May 2004, 9th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment was
redesignated as 4th Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment (Assault Helicopter) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and assigned
to the Aviation Brigade of the 3rd Infantry Division, the first aviation unit of action formed under the army
transformation plan.
In January 2005, 4th Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment again deployed to Iraq in support of the Combat Aviation
Brigade and 3rd Infantry Division. 4th Battalion brought the Marne Division the flexibility and tactical mobility
of the air assault. During OIF III, the Marne Assault Battalion conducted 148 air assaults and raids, safely
transported over 90,000 coalition forces and flew nearly 20,000 combat hours--more than any other UH-60 Blackhawk
Battalion in history.
Upon redeployment from OIF III, 4th Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment Soldiers and families relocated to Hunter Army
Airfield and are proud to be part of the Marne Division!
