In 1992, following the redeployment from Operation Desert
Shield/Storm, 9-1 Aviation Battalion was re-designated as the 603d Aviation Support Battalion, 3d infantry
Division in Ansbach, Germany. In 1996, the Division moved to Fort Stewart/Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia with
the re-designation of the 24th Infantry Division to the 3d Infantry Division. Since activation, the 603d ASB
supported every major training exercise and deployment involving elements of the Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB).
In January 2003, the 603d ASB deployed with the Division Support Command to support the Aviation Brigade in
its combat roll during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The 603d ASB distinguished itself by providing critical Combat
Service Support (CSS) under extreme combat conditions over unforgiving terrain to the Aviation Brigade as the
Division attacked into the heart of Baghdad. 603d ASB received the Presidential Unit Citation for its courage,
skill and professionalism in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
On 16 March 2004, the 603d ASB was assigned to the CAB, 3d Infantry Division as part of the division's reorganization.
Throughout the year, the Battalion supported various field exercise and gunneries, including three rotations at the
Joint Readiness Training Center. January 2005 found the 603d ASB deploying in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom
III where the battalion quickly set the conditions for the CAB to assume their combat mission in Iraq.
During OIF III, 603d ASB continued to provide first-class logistical support to the CAB, maintaining the 3d Infantry
Division's fleet of 118 aircraft, 900 vehicles, and other ground equipment. The Headquarters and Supply Company
issued over 3.7 million gallons of fuel, produced and issued 365,000 gallons of water, received and issued over
320 tons of ammunition, and provided critical aircraft repair parts to the brigade. Alpha Company completed 175
aircraft phase inspections, 9,200 work orders, eight successful missions to recover downed aircraft in enemy territory
and armed Apaches at the FARP with 2,600 rockets, 45 hell fires and 19,000 30mm rounds. Bravo Company was the first
in the division to transition to the Army's new Two-Tier Maintenance Program and completed 320 equipment services
and over 1,400 maintenance work orders on wheeled vehicles, weapons, communications and electronics, generators and
various ground support equipment directly impacting the CAB's combat readiness.
In recognition of the monumental efforts by all the logistics Soldiers of the
'NO MISSION DENIED' Battalion during
OIF III, the 603d Aviation Support Battalion was awarded the Army Aviation Association of America's Outstanding
Aviation Logistics Support Unit of the Year Award for its support to the Combat Aviation Brigade during Operation
Iraqi Freedom III.
