Snakes...

Some hunters may occasionally encounter snakes while walking through the woods of Fort Stewart or Hunter Army Airfield. More often than not, the snake will be "non-venomous" or as most people would say, "non-poisonous".  Of Georgia's 40 different species of snakes, only six are venomous.

Fort Stewart is home to a number of beautiful and fascinating snakes including the swamp-dwelling, orange-and-black mud snake and the handsome, heavy-bodied eastern kingsnake – a snake which often eats rattlers and other venomous snakes.  Snakes are common in many of our habitats, and are an important part of our natural heritage.  Snakes perform an important role as predators of rats, insects, and yes, other snakes!

All non-venomous snakes are protected by state law and may not be captured or killed.  Populations of venomous snakes have declined in some areas due to habitat loss and over collection.  Snake hunting or snake collecting of any kind is not allowed on Fort Stewart or Hunter Army Airfield.  Experts on snakebite discourage persons from attempting to kill or harass venomous snakes, because doing so may increase ones’ chances of being bitten.

As a way to educate our outdoor enthusiasts, anglers, hunters, as well as those residents living on or adjacent to the installation, the following on-line publication about snakes in Georgia is provided as a service of the installation's Fish & Wildlife Branch and the University of Georgia: (Click on the title and headings below)
