CSM John K. Johnson was born in Tuskegee, Alabama and resided in Prattville, Alabama. He entered the United States Army in 1988 upon graduating from Prattville High School in June. He attended One Station Unit Training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma to become a 13B, Cannon Crewman.
CSM Johnson has held a variety of assignments including: Cannon crewman and Gunner for B Battery 4/3 FA BN in Garlsted, Germany; Ammunition Sergeant for Service Battery 5/18th FA BN in Fort Sill, Oklahoma; Howitzer Section Chief for B Battery, 8/8th FA BN, Camp Hovey, Republic of Korea; Small Group Leader for basic Non-Commissioned Officers Course, Fort Sill, Oklahoma; Drill Sergeant for D 1/19th FA BN, Fort Sill, Oklahoma; Gunnery Sergeant and Chief of Firing Battery for B Battery, 4/11th FA BN, Fort Wainwright, Alaska; Fire Support Battery Observer Control for Joint Readiness Training Center, Fort Polk, Louisiana; Battalion Master Gunner, Operation Sergeant, Intelligence Sergeant for 3/7th FA BN, and 1SG for B Battery 3/7th FA BN Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; Senior Enlisted Advisor to the DCGM, 3rd Infantry Division, Special Troops Battalion, Fort Stewart, Georgia; Command Sergeant Major for 1/410th FA BN, Fort Knox, Kentucky; Command Sergeant Major for 2/20th FA BN, Fort Hood, Texas; 3rd Infantry Division DIVARTY Command Sergeant Major, Fort Stewart, Georgia. He is a combat tested warrior with tours in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation New Dawn.
CSM Johnson’s military and civilian education includes: Warrior Leaders Course (WLC), Senior Leaders Course (SLC), Advanced Leader Course (ALC), Sergeants Major Force Management Course, First Sergeant Course, Drill Sergeant School, Air Assault Course, Airborne Course, Joint Firepower Control Course, Small Group Instructor Course, Arctic Survival Training Course, Hazardous Material Transportation Course, and Unit Movement Officers Course. He is a graduate of the Sergeants Major Academy class #59. Command Sergeant Major Johnson also holds an associate’s degree in General Studies from Central Texas College, and a bachelor’s degree in Applied Science from Excelsior College.
CSM Johnson’s awards and decorations include: Bronze Star (2 Bronze OLC), Meritorious Service Medal (4 Bronze OLC), Army Commendation Medal (1 Silver and 1 Bronze OLC), Army Achievements (3 Bronze OLC), Good Conduct Medal (9th Award), Southwest Asia Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (Numeral 4), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (Numerical 8), Air Assault Badge, Parachutes Badge, Combat Action Badge, the Drivers Badge with Track and Wheel Device and Expert Marksmanship Badge. CSM Johnson is a member of the Ancient Order of Saint Barbara and the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club.
